Reviving Your Nursing Career: “Overcoming Stagnation and Boredom”
At some point in your nursing career, you may feel trapped. While you still enjoy helping people and value what you do, your enthusiasm may have subsided, leaving you no longer find work challenging or stimulating – and perhaps bored.
Don’t take it personally if you feel this way – this doesn’t make you a poor nurse or unfit for this career path! Take some time to reflect on why this situation exists for you, along with any advice we might offer for combatting boredom in the workplace (besides just self-reflection!). We also have other ways of helping combat boredom!
You no longer have to feel stuck or bored in your career; here are some tangible steps and actions you can take today.
Find Something You Are Passionate About
Reignite your nursing passion by finding an engaging project that allows you to develop your wide range of skills or apply your talents, such as volunteering or professional nurse associations. Start searching your workplace, volunteer associations, or professional nurse associations for exciting new projects to pursue; perhaps teaching is your career goal. Hospitals offering teaching facilities & technical training can arrange additional clinical rotations with nursing students during clinical rotations for clinical teachers who would love to work more with prospective students if they work there as an employee.
Quality education can be one of the best ways to break out of a career rut and move forward successfully. Learning new skills, honing your expertise, building confidence, and becoming a better clinical nurse are all outcomes of nursing education that may improve career growth. An advanced nursing degree could open up more job opportunities and greater autonomy over your schedule as a practical nurse.
LPN nurses looking to advance in their careers will find that earning a licensed nurse license is the next logical step. You can go with – nursing assistant programs in Illinois; (clinical training programs) or consider Verve College’s Illinois College of Nursing accreditation (community college at Chicago & Oak Brook)) which allows you to continue working while studying!
Do You Enjoy Nursing as a Profession
Nursing can be an incredible profession with endless options! Are you drawn to working in the ER or ICU, nursing home healthcare, home healthcare, or at-home health care settings rather than hospitals – nursing offers all this and more to provide basic care in a clinical setting! Even if a particular specialty bores you, that doesn’t necessarily indicate boredom with nursing. You may prefer another specialization; nursing is there for anyone! And even if one specialty fails you, that doesn’t indicate boredom with nursing altogether – perhaps another specialty could still fit better with what interests them – we have plenty of roles waiting out there! If something doesn’t quite click with you, don’t assume boredom with all possible specialties available or work. All options exist within the nursing field; decide what type of job title.
Whatever specialty catches your fancy because there are boundless possibilities just waiting for you somewhere out there! And remember. If something feels boring, that may still feel unfulfilling. That may mean something different altogether. It may mean something isn’t quite what you are there. You could still need help! If that one area doesn’t interest you. Don’t rule; it necessarily means nursing itself is boring; perhaps another may still exist somewhere out there waiting might do it. Try exploring alternatives as much – at least the possibilities! One type of position would work better suit your preferences! There are so many more still waiting out there. If it just might mean there, that could do what you like – that can change of interest will suit you? Well. If one specialty won’t.
Are You Bored or Tired? Take an Inventory
Disinterest or disregard for your job could indicate more than mere boredom. Burnout is an occupational health risk associated with chronic workplace stress that goes unmanaged, as experienced by nurses. Nurse burnout typically manifests itself with mental, emotional, and physical exhaustion; negative attitudes or cynicism towards work; and reduced professionalism – signs that you could have reached burnout status and no longer enjoy your position as much. Even if it seems like boredom at times, burnout may have taken hold and become something far worse.
