5 Ways to Protect Patients from Infections

In honor of National Nurses Month and to learn more about how practical nurses can implement to avoid infections in their everyday work, CDC Project Firstline interviewed Shay Drummond, Janet Glowicz, and other infection prevention and control experts. They discussed the ways that they prevent germs from spreading and how they protect themselves and patients in nursing homes.
Infections Prevention & Control Tips to Protect Patients
1. Recognizing Infection Risks
Infection prevention and control in healthcare settings for nurses involves identifying the moments during the day when germs can spread. They may need to wash their hands, use resource management, or take enhanced precautions like isolating patients.
2. Cleaning Their Hands
Are you aware?? Nurses touch 15 surfaces on average during one patient interaction. All surfaces nurses touch can be a source of germs in the healthcare environment. One of the easiest and most effective methods for nurses to limit the spread and protect themselves and their patients is by using alcohol-based hand soap or water and soap. 3. Using Appropriate PPE
