Are Students Required to Repay Financial Aid?

You should know the different types of financial aid assistance to determine if and when you will have to repay the money for nursing degrees in Illinois.

Here Are the Types of Aid You Can Receive and How You’ll Be Required to Pay Them Back

  1. Grants

Unlike some other forms of financial aid, grants are not usually repaid. However, in extenuating situations, you may be required to do so. If you withdraw from a course or change your status to part-time, you could have to return all or part of your grant.

You may also have to pay a portion or all of your federal grant if you receive outside scholarships or grants that reduce the need for federal assistance or don’t meet the TEACH Grant requirements. Grants are usually distributed based on need, not merit. A grant can help reduce the amount you have to borrow for student loans.

There are five different types of grants issued by the government:

  • FederalPell Grant: In the 2021-22 academic year, low-income students pursuing a bachelors degree could receive up to $6 495 annually.
  • Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants: If you do not have a Bachelor’s degree or a graduate degree yet, you may be eligible to receive up to $4,000 in aid per year. This is dependent upon the amount of money available at your school’s federal loan servicer.
  • Teacher Education Aid for College and Higher Education: Teachers pursuing a Bachelor’s degree or graduate degree can receive grants of up to $4,000 each year. To be eligible, you have to agree to teach for at least four years at a school with a low income in a field that is in high demand for college students.
  • Iraq & Afghanistan Service Grants: If your parent, guardian, or spouse was in the military and they died while serving in Iraq or Afghanistan during the 2021-22 fiscal year, you may be eligible for up to $5983.34 (this amount changes each year).
  • Grants from your state: You may also be eligible for grant money from your state.

When you complete the FAFSA, you will determine your eligibility for grants from state and federal governments.

  1. Scholarships

Many different organizations can offer scholarship awards for college education. These include LPN schools, employers, and individuals. They also come from nonprofits and communities. The amount of a scholarship can be small or large, covering the entire cost of tuition. Most organizations award scholarships based on merit, not financial aid need. You can apply for awards through your school, but in most cases, you must submit your information to the sponsoring organization.

  1. Student Loans

Loans are sums of money that you must repay with interest. Even if you don’t finish your degree or are dissatisfied with your education, you usually still have to pay back your loan. Since most borrowers have to repay their student loans, receiving grants and scholarship aid is better than being required to repay the money. You probably won’t cover your college expenses with grants and scholarships.

Student Loans: What You Should Know?

Federal student loan awards are based on information provided on your FAFSA. Federal student loan benefits include deferment, forbearance, and income-driven repayment programs. In addition, they tend to offer lower interest rates than other private loans.

There are currently three types of federal student loans for students:

  • Direct Subsidized Loans: The amount you can borrow depends on your school year and whether you are an independent or dependent student. Since the loans are subsidized, the government pays any interest accrued while you attend school.
  • Direct, Unsubsidized Loans: The amount you can borrow depends on your year of study and whether you are a dependent student or an independent one. You’re still responsible for all the interest.
  • Direct Plus Loans: Students pursuing graduate and professional degrees or parents who have an undergraduate student in their care can borrow up to the amount they need for school, minus any other financial aid they receive.

After exhausting your federal loan options, applying for a loan from a private lender may be necessary to cover school costs. Private loans do not always offer the same benefits and protections as federal loans. Make sure you know where to pay your student loan.

  1. Federal Work-Study

The federal work-study program allows you to earn extra money for your education. Students with financial needs can get a part-time position while attending school. Your award will depend on your financial situation when you applied and your school’s funding for eligible students.
